How to Detox your Liver After a Party Weekend: Interview with Holistic Nutritionist, Jill Kay

liver detox

HAPPY LONG WEEKEND EVERYONE!… for those of you who get a long weekend… ahem… not us who work in the restaurant/bar industry.

This weekend is CANADA DAY! And for our neighbours, we’ve got July 4th coming up, too!

We all know what that means…. a cocktail or two…or 5…or 10..

Maybe camping? The beach? BBQ? Whatever it is you’re doing… chances are, your liver is going to hate you by the end of it…

I’m so excited to share this post with you guys! I recently interviewed my friend Jill and got tons of great tips for you guys on how to detox your liver after a few too many cocktails…

Just to give a little background on Jill… this girl is BOSS. She’s a Registered Holistic Nutritionist/owner of Down to Earth Wellness. She has a kick ass wellness blog. AND she’s opening up a smoothie truck any day now, called The Stash.

I know all of my readers will just love her blog, so go check it out, follow, subscribe… share the love!

Here’s my interview with Jill!
What are your plans for Canada Day weekend?

I’m definitely going to relax a bit over this long weekend and we may check out the events downtown if we can. And on Canada Day we’re hopefully going to open our new smoothie mobile food trailer! So that will be fun and exciting. And if we can fit it in, I’d like to head to Skagway over the long weekend too and go hiking 🙂

Go-to summer cocktail?

I admit that I am picky when it comes to alcohol and bevies. I find a lot of stuff is either to sugary or to strong for me, but I think what I need to do is try one of YOUR recipes out as they sound delicious +healthier!
When I do drink occasionally, I usually get a mojito (half sweet) or a sangria (yumm). I also found a beer that I like from the Winterlong Brewery. I like the “Sweater Weather” beer which is an oatmeal stout beer. So good!

Smoothie must haves! What’s something you ALWAYS have in your smoothie?

Probably hemp seeds or coconut oil…. or both 😉 I always like to balance my smoothies by having some healthy fats and protein in them so that my energy + moods stay even and on track.

Let’s talk detoxing…..

What are your top tips on detoxing your liver?

Off the top of my head some key tips for detoxing your liver would be:

♥ Drink plenty of filtered water and add a squeeze of fresh lemon as this drink is hydrating and helps to flush toxins out of the body via the kidneys. Lemon is especially helpful as it’s liver supporting and detoxifying and can also help to create a more friendly PH balance in the body.

♥ Juicing fresh vegetables is another great way to support the liver as you will get a ton of phytonutrients and antioxidants that are easy to digest and absorb.

♥ Be kind to your liver. Avoid binge drinking or drinking too often (it’s all about balance right, as I’m sure Candice has mentioned before!) Moderation is key 🙂

♥ If you’d like to support your liver beyond just food – consider migrating towards eco-friendly and organic personal care products (make up, body wash etc), home cleaning products and organic foods. The liver is the main filter of our body and it has a big job to do. If we can move towards more organic foods and products, this will lighten the load on our liver which can help us to feel better and have vibrant health!

What are your go-to liver detoxing foods?

Ooo good question!
♥ So many foods are great for liver support and detoxification. Try to focus on eating vibrantly coloured fruits + vegetables which are rich in antioxidants. Eat foods especially from the cruciferous family as they are excellent at speeding up the different phases of liver detoxification. These foods include cabbage, kale, broccoli, brussels sprouts and cauliflower.

♥ Other foods/herbs to consider are: dandelion root tea which is detoxifying and liver supportive as well as milk thistle which is a liver supporting herb.

Other than nutritionally, what are some ways one could bounce back after a weekend of a little too much partying?

♥ I think it’s important to drink a lot of water while drinking alcohol and also avoid the sugary sweet drinks. Water will help to hydrate and flush out toxins from your body and keeping the sugar LOW in your drinks can also help with feeling less sugar overloaded and hung over the next day.

♥ I’d suggest to be sure to hydrate, sleep, eat some easy to digest foods rich in vitamins/minerals and also support your gut health by throwing a probiotic supplement into your daily routine!

♥ And If your stomach is feeling queazy, try to add ginger to your foods or make a cup of ginger tea which can greatly help to settle an upset stomach.

Other than that; take it easy, eat healthy + practice moderation 🙂
