5 Things to do Before Starting Your New Year Resolutions

5 things to do before starting your new year resolutions

The New Year… New DECADE even, begins in less than 48 hours. Remember back when we’d read stories about the future and robots and stuff in school and they always took place in the year 2020?

Welp. Here we are.

I can’t say I’m really one for resolutions per say, however, I’m all about a fresh start. New beginnings. This year is all about growth for me. Optimizing my health. Being present. Learning. Trying. Failing. Trying again.

It’s not about one end goal for me but more about building systems and habits that will help me to be the best version of myself.

But no matter what your goals are… whether it’s to lose 20 lbs or simply just start going to the gym, or to learn to play an instrument or finish your degree… there are a few things that need to be done to really allow the space (and time – this is key!) to achieve those goals.

3 things to do before beginning your new year resolution

5 Things to do Before Starting Your New Years Resolutions

1. Audit Your Time

The same way you might keep a food journal if you’re trying to see where you’re going wrong, AUDIT. YOUR. TIME. From the moment you wake up, write down how you’re spending your time. Are you scrolling through social media for 30 minutes in the morning but can’t find time to workout? What are you doing after 7pm? If you don’t go to bed until 11, what are you spending your time on during those 4 hours? Do you NEED to unwind i nfront of Netflix every night? Okay, you do? Can you cut that back to 1 hr?

Write down everything and be honest with yourself. Where can you stop wasting time and start making room for things that are more important to you or to help you achieve your goals?

2. Become BFF’s With Google Calendar

Now that you’ve audited your time, it’s time we start scheduling it. If your plan is to get back to the gym, schedule it in. Make it an appointment that you do not miss. I recommend even scheduling in driving time. Is it a 15 min drive to the gym? Factor in that extra half hour there and back.

What I love about google calendar is that you can colour code it which makes it super easy to read. I have my workouts in yellow, blogging time in pink (the exact pink you see right here on the blog!), appointments in blue, etc.

3. Set Quarterly Goals

I find setting a goal for the year is too broad a time. It’s easy to think “well I still have 8 more months to do ______” Set goals in 3 month increments. Write them down – most effectively, write them down as though they’ve already happened. Look at them everyday. And make sure to check in with yourself. At the end of January, where are you at? Is it time to increase that goal? Is it time to step it up?

4. Audit Your Social Media

It’s said that you become the 5 people you surround yourself with most. This goes for the content you consume too. If you’re following people on instagram who make you feel like shit about your life, your body, your relationship… unfollow. And better yet, start engaging with people who make you feel good or who inspire you. You’re going to be on there anyways, right? Social media can be an amazing tool if used right. Start engaging with someone who posts healthy recipes that look delicious or someone who shares awesome workout routines or business/career inspiration. The more you engage, the more their content will show up on your feed and before you know it, that mindless scrolling just gave you a confidence boost AND an idea for a healthy dinner for your fam tonight.

5. Declutter

This one may take a while, but just get started. I just organized/gutted my pantry, Lily’s toys and clothes, and my makeup/skincare. Next is my closet and then my 4 inboxes. Get rid of the things that don’t serve you. Unsubscribe from emails from those places you haven’t shopped from in over a year. Organize folders with flight itineraries, amazon receipts, school news letters, etc.

While we’re on the subject, what are YOUR goals for the New Year?
