Lactation Oatmeal Smoothie
April 28, 2020

Oatmeal Smoothie – Psst. New Moms, this is great for lactation!

Anyone else baking up a storm while we’re all stuck in quarantine?  Apparently toilet paper and flour are getting us all through this hard time.

I for one, have been making a few too many cookies. Kristin Cavallari’s Almond Butter Cookies to be exact. (They’re so fucking good and you don’t feel gross after… which is why they’re such a problem)

Anyways, truth be told, most days, I’m not a big breakfast guy but I do love a smoothie, especially post-workout. When Emmett was born, I wanted to make sure my breastfeeding game was strong. We had some issues with Lily not gaining weight and I just didn’t want to go down that road again. So, knowing oatmeal was great for lactation, I was eating it every. single. day. And after doing a bit of research into other foods that can boost lactation, I put together this oatmeal smoothie that tastes exactly like an oatmeal cookie.

Breastfeeding or not, you’re gonna love it! And if you’re trying to cut back on the cookies, lemme help you here.

Lactation Oatmeal Smoothie

Here’s why some of these ingredients are so great for breastfeeding moms!

Bananas
Helps you to reach your recommended B6 requirements, as well as fibre and potassium. Also great for easing heartburn and indigestion if that’s something you had to deal with during pregnancy!

Cinnamon
Helps to increase milk flow

Flax
Can increase milk production

Almond Butter
Almonds are rich in Vitamin E and rich in Omega-3 which helps to produce more milk, protein, and calcium.

Oatmeal
A great source of iron and fibre, is a known “comfort food”, loaded with energy, and is great for digestion.

Note: This is solely based on my own research but I am not a medical or health professional.

And if you’re not breastfeeding…. you simply just get to enjoy a nutrition packed version of an oatmeal cookie.

Oatmeal Smoothie

Ingredients
+ 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
+ 1/3 cup oatmeal (use gluten-free oats to make this gluten-free)
+ 1 tbsp ground flaxseed
+ 1-2 tbsp almond butter
+ 1/2 frozen banana
+ Dash of cinnamon
+ Unsweetened vanilla almond milk

Toss all in a blender and enjoy! I find between the cold almond milk and 1/2 frozen banana that I don’t need ice. If you prefer it to be colder, you may want to add some!
