Spring Cleaning For Your Skin

Okay! It’s FINALLY that time of year! We’re cleaning our closets, eating clean, amping up our workouts. Let’s not forget about our skin.

If you’re anything like me, you probably spent the whole winter applying extra moisturizers, maybe changing up your makeup routine, using self tanners.  It’s time to give your skin a little detox.

I like to do this every once in a while, not just in the spring.  But I’m currently detoxing my skin right now, so I thought I’d share!

These are my skin detoxing rules:

  • Stay away from as many chemicals as possible
  • OILS OILS OILS – the BEST makeup remover

So here’s how it goes. I usually take 2-3 days to follow these routines.  I like to do it when I have a couple days off from work and can go completely makeup free.  If that’s not possible, just go with as minimal makeup as possible and as natural as possible

ONE.  Again, OILS. I can’t tell you enough how much I love them. Don’t be scared of them if you have oily skin, because I do to.  And nothing has helped my oily-ness as much as oils. seriously. I keep COCONUT OIL in the shower at all times to use as makeup remover.  I’ve had some really bad issues with my eyes so using coconut oil also helps keep my eyelids from getting dry and moisturizes my lashes! I use it every day!

TWO. If after removing any makeup with coconut oil, your skin feels too greasy for your comfort level, cleans with something VERY gentle. I really like the  Cleansing Micellar Foaming Water from LaRoche-Posay.  It’s soap and paraben free!

THREE. Exfoliate! But again, with something gentle.  Lately I’ve been using the Mineral Peel Face from ORG.  It’s paraben and sulfate free! And super easy.  You spritz it on your face, wait a few seconds and message your skin.  I’m prone to redness so exfoliating has always been something I HATE doing.  But because of the aloe vera and jojoba oil, it calms your skin, and I have yet to get any redness from it

FOUR. Exfoliate your body too! It’s not just your face that gets loaded with the extra moisturizers.  And after the long cold winters and dry skin, you could probably use it. I like to do a full body exfoliating. A good one. And then the next day, a once over, a little more gentle.

While I’m exfoliating I like to apply a mask.  This shouldn’t be done every day. Typically just once a week, or as needed.  When I’m detoxing my skin, I like to use a mask that really PURIFIES. I recently posted my recipe for my Activated Charcoal Mask.  If you’re not much of a DIY-er or your a little pressed for time, I LOVE the Pore Purifying Clay Mask from Vichy.  It seriously works!

Okay, so now we’re done with all the in shower stuff. Here’s what I do afterwards…

ONE. OILS. again. I’ve started using rosehip oil as a face moisturizer (or sometimes underneath my moisturizer) and I’m in LOVE. Like I said, my skin is prone to redness. ALWAYS red. Ugh! When I apply rose hip oil before bed, I wake up with skin that is even, glowing, and a tad dewy. Try it! But really, any oil will do. I try to skip my other moisturizers for a couple days just to avoid any added chemicals

TWO. Moisturize your bod, with, you guessed it, more oils. Coconut oil is my favorite for this. It’s a bit greasy feeling at first, but soaks in nicely and won’t leave your clothes all gross.

THREE.  If I have any blemishes, I like to use a bit of tea tree oil.  It’s quite potent so I wet a cotton pad before dabbing on the tea tree, and dap only on the spots where I need it.  It clears up blemishes so quickly! Again, amazing.

These are the things I love and that really work for me! Again, the main rule is to just go and natural/chemical free and as minimal as possible.  Start your days with some hot lemon water, cleanse gently, and apply your rose hip oil! Within a couple days, you’ll notice your skin is rejuvenated, glowing, and ready to take on all those every day things we’re loading on to our skin.  (And you’ll have the perfect canvas for some self tanner. Bonus!)
