The Perfect Margarita

Okay Guys, this is the first drink recipe I’m sharing and I’m so excited to share this because a margarita is my GO TO cocktail.

When it comes to cocktails I like very simple, classic and, well, rather strong. Nothing sugary or sweet. And sometimes that can be VERY hard to find. Every bar/restaurant does Margaritas differently.  In fact, most places use a mix that is half sugar. HALF.  That’s tons of added calories.

If I’m going to be adding calories in a drink….It’s gonna be because I’m making it a double.

margarita

Typically when I go out for dinner, I like to start with a cocktail and then move on to wine with dinner.  I like to have something fresh and light.  Margaritas are fun too because they don’t make you drowsy (you know when you’re just sipping wine and nothing is really going on around you and before you know it, you’re ready for bed?)

I’ve been a server/bartender for over 8 years now and I have seen this classic cocktail done MANY different ways.  I’ve learned to ask how they’re made (if its not on a menu) before I order.

margarita with tequila and lime

Yes, the bottle of tequila is practically empty. A mere 24 hours prior it was almost full.  My boyfriend and I were having a couple drinks with some friends before I realized I wasn’t going to have enough left to do this post and made them stop drinking. HA!

margarita half rim of salt

This is how I like to make it:

HALF RIM of salt.     This is important.  As much as I love salt, it’s kind of gross when all the salt falls in your glass and you’re left sucking up salted melted ice. Simple just cut a slit in a lime wedge and run it along half the glass. Dip the glass in COARSE salt.

Then add to the glass:

  • 1.5 OZ of Tequila
  • 1 OZ of fresh squeezed lime juice  (do this yourself OR you can buy fresh REAL lime juice. Not those little bottles shaped like limes.  But REAL lime juice)
  • a splash of water – I typically do an ounce
  • fill with ice
  • stir!

*1/2 oz simple syrup if you like it a little more sweet

The key here is LOTS of ice.  I like it super cold. Load it! I like to stir mine so it doesn’t get too watered down.

I also like it sour.  So if you like something a little more sweet, add just a half ounce of simple syrup.

I hope you guys like it! I’m off to drink what’s left or the tequila and catch up on everything that is reality TV.
