Coffee Old Fashioned with Molasses

Coffee Old Fashioned – Because I Love a Twist

I just came on here to write this post and EVERYTHING IS DIFFERENT WITH WORDPRESS.  I’m probably set to have automatic updates or something, but doesn’t WordPress know I’m the kind of girl who hits “remind me later” until half my apps stop working? I like the good old fashioned kind of stuff *wink wink #dadjoke

This is probably all going to be great. Just give me a moment to adjust.

Deep breath and a sip of ummmmm MY FAVOURITE NEW COCKTAIL.

Coffee Old Fashioned with Molasses

You guys, I had so much fun coming up with this cocktail. I love a drink with minimal mix. And as I said earlier, I love a twist. I wanted to do something with molasses and I was finding a lot of interesting recipes to play off of but nothing was really quite right. It wasn’t until I was like “hey how would a bourbon coffee desert drink taste?” that I was then like…. can coffee go in an old fashioned? …..Can molasses go in an old fashioned?

YES YES YES. It can.

And it’s fucking delicious.

This is the perfect, and I mean, PERFECT dessert drink for someone not looking for that whole baileys and coffee with whip cream, a sugared rim, a cherry, and heavier than your entire dinner.

First, I was trying this shaken with ice and strained into a coupe glass. Because let’s face it, everything looks fancier in a coupe glass. And it’s DELICIOUS that way, but definitely tastes more… rich? Maybe? Thicker? I’m not sure the word I’m looking for here. But that’s how we were drinking it and it was amazing and we were happy about it.

Then I got lazy. As we all do. And I started just pouring it over ice. It turns out, I like it more that way! It’s colder, a little more refreshing, and not as rich but omgthisissogood-and-I’m-doing-this-all-the-time.

Coffee Old Fashioned with Molasses
Coffee Old Fashioned
  • 1.5 oz Bourbon
  • 1.25 oz cold-brew coffee
  • .75 oz vanilla molasses simple syrup (see below)
  • A few dashed Free Pour Jenny’s coffee-pecan bitters (any similar bitters will do but I LOVE this brand)
  • Orange peel for garnish
For the molasses simple syrup
  • 1 cup coconut sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp molasses
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Combine ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Once boiled let sit to cool. Store in fridge!

Combine the bourbon, cold-brew, simple syrup, and bitters in a glass with ice. Stir well. Garnish with an orange slice. And Enjoy! (If you’re not as lazy as I tend to be, it’s best stirred with ice in a cocktail shaker and strained over ice)

Get the Coffee-Pecan bitters here!

What cocktails do you love to cozy up with on a cold winter night!?
